The General Manager of Sierra Leone Airports Authority Launches $80,000 Calibration Project to Strengthen Aviation Safety at Freetown International Airport Ahead of the ECOWAS Summit
The Sierra Leone Airports Authority (SLAA), in partnership with the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), has commenced the implementation phase of their landmark Memorandum of Understanding signed during the sidelines at the ICAO General Assembly in Montreal last year. Starting today April 20 to April 26, 2026, a specialized NAMA team will conduct flight calibration of navigational aids at Freetown International Airport, a project valued at $80,000.
General Manager of SLAA, Mr. Jack D.K Massaquoi, underscored that this initiative reflects the good strides of the Honourable Minister of Transport and Aviation, Alhaji Fanday Turay, in advancing the President’s vision of safeguarding Freetown International Airport ahead of the upcoming ECOWAS Summit in June 2026. He emphasized that the calibration project is both a technical milestone and a strategic assurance of Sierra Leone’s readiness to host regional leaders under the highest safety standards.
The mission is spearheaded by Flight Inspector and Head of Team, Mr. Selzing Dorkur Miri, who highlighted that the calibration will ensure precision and reliability of navigational aids, thereby enhancing aviation safety and interoperability across West African airspace. Mr. Miri noted that the exercise also strengthens regional cooperation by sharing expertise and building operational resilience.
Senior officials from SLAA, NAMA, and the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority attended the launch ceremony, reaffirming their shared commitment to ICAO aligned standards and collaborative growth. The project positions Sierra Leone as a proactive regional player in aviation modernization and safety excellence.
